Origin of Heartland Setters

Heartland Setters began in September of 1994, when Dianne purchased Abbey from J. C. Smith, "Honie River English Setters" in Branchport, NY. The purchase of Abbey was preceded by a long study of the breed and a desire to have a dog that looked like a show dog but could be taken out to the field. Abbey was a great companion and started to show her field abilities the following fall.

The appreciation turned to obsession and, it was decided if one was good, two were better and a second dog would be great to have for both home and field. Cain was purchased from Warren Sheckells, "Pinecoble English Setters" in Springfield Center, NY.

With two really good dogs and a desire to learn more about the breed, we were very fortunate that J. C. and Warren were so generous with their time answering a host of questions and providing direction.

Our first breeding of Abbey was in March of 1999 to "Classic Setters" Second Chance. Eight pups were whelped in May and Heartland Setters was born. In August of 2000 we purchased two additional dogs from Jan Turner's kennel, "Setter Hills Gun Dogs".
